Such an old song and still up to date with the events of the world....
Rock the Casbah was published in 1982 and inspired by the banning of rock music in Iran......
"The song gives a fictitious account of the ban being defied by the population who proceed to "rock the casbah", causing the King to order jet fighters to bomb any people in violation of the ban. The pilots ignore the orders, and instead play rock music on their cockpit radios. The song does not mention Iran, nor does it give the specifics of any Islamic nation, and in fact it uses Arabic terms instead of Persian, mentioning casbah, sharif, bedouin, and sheikh. This is typical of the Clash, who often mix up some of the particulars in political songs. This is also shown in the line 'He (he being the fictional Muslim king) thinks it's not kosher'. Kosher (Hebrew: כָּשֵר) is a Jewish term and is unlikely to be used by an Islamic king - a deliberate irony further emphasized by featuring an orthodox Jew dancing with a Sheik in the song's video.

It has been reported that "Rock the Casbah" was an unofficial anthem for the American army during the first Gulf War (the line about dropping "bombs between the minarets" being particularly relevant). In fact, it was the first song played by Armed Forces Radio at the start of the war. This has been seen as highly ironic, if not downright insulting, by many Clash fans, given the band's well established left-wing politics and anti-war stance, yet as appropriate by some, as the song is an attack on hypocritical Arab leaders who ban Western influences for their subjects, but are happy to reap the benefits of such influences for themselves.

The great Nicholas D. Kristof in the New York Times dated november 12, 2006 (Bandages and Bayonets) keeps telling us about the horror of the Darfur conflict:
"In diplomatic circles, the Sudanese government can be wonderfully polished as it scoffs at accusations of genocide and denounces calls for U.N. peacekeepers in Darfur.
In isolated villages, everything is more straightforward — like the men in Sudanese military uniforms who on Tuesday captured Abdullah Idris, a 27-year-old father of two, in the fields as he was farming. They tried to shoot him in the chest, but the gun misfired.
“So they beat him to the ground,” explained Osman Omar, a nephew of Mr. Abdullah who was one of several neighbors who recounted the events in the same way. “And then they used their bayonets to gouge out his eyes.”
Mr. Abdullah lay on his back on a hospital bed, his eye sockets swathed in bandages soaked in blood and pus. A sister sat on the floor beside him, crying; his wife and small children stood nearby, looking overwhelmed and bewildered. He was so traumatized in the incident that he has been unable to speak since, but he constantly reaches out to hold the hands of his family members.

The most painful sight I’ve seen here isn’t Mr. Abdullah’s bloody face, but the expression of disgust on his children’s faces as they stare at him. You see that, and you can’t help feeling equal horror and disgust — at our shamefully weak international response, which allows this first genocide of the 21st century to drag on and on. "

La branche irakienne d'Al-Qaida profère de nouvelles menaces d'attaques terroristes

"Dans un enregistrement audio diffusé vendredi 10 novembre sur Internet, la branche irakienne du réseau terroriste Al-Qaida menace de faire exploser la Maison Blanche, dans le cadre de l'instauration d'un "califat islamique". Dans cet enregistrement, dont l'authenticité n'a pu être établie dans l'immédiat, le chef d'Al-Qaida en Irak, Abou Hamza Al-Mouhajer, annonce"la fin d'une étape du djihad (...) pour inaugurer le projet du califat islamique et restituer à l'islam sa grandeur".
Par "califat islamique" , Al-Mouhajer entend l'instauration d'un Etat islamique à l'échelle mondiale.
"Nous jurons de ne pas nous reposer (...) tant que nous n'aurons pas fait exploser la maison la plus sordide qu'on appelle Maison Blanche", poursuit le chef d'Al-Qaida. "Je dis à [Bush] : Ne sois pas pressé de prendre la fuite à l'instar de ton ministre de la défense [NDLR : Donald Rumsfeld, qui a présenté sa démission mercredi 8 novembre]. Nous n'avons pas encore étanché notre soif de votre sang."
Ernest Dupond, le terroriste du terroir (qui défend la démocratie à coup de baguettes piégées au roquefort) entend réagir contre cette nouvelle déclaration inepte.
Et pour ce faire pose deux questions précises (qui malheureusement ont très peu de chance de faire la une de la presse mondiale car Ernest Dupond n'a pas encore tué des milliers d'innocents)
1- Combien d'années encore allons nous offrir à des fous dangereux criminels les honneurs de la Une dans la presse mondiale??
2- Est ce qu'Ernest Dupond peux publier en Une du Monde sa position sur le devoir d'ingérence anti-génocidaire, et son application au cas du Darfour? C'est à tout le moins aussi intéressant que le concept de "Califat Islamique".
3- Si le génocide en cour au Darfour intéresse moins que les inepties d'Al Quaeda, est ce qu'Ernest Dupond peux alors s'exprimer dans la presse mondial sur le "Califat Wallon"?????

Discovering a great musician is so exciting

It's not that often that one feels a new artist is bringing something special to the musical scene.
As far as I'm concerned if I find one every other year I'm happy.
We are in November and I thought I would not find anyone on time....
Well, James Morrison might be my 2006 discovery, the same way Brad Mehldau was (my) 2005 surprise.
If you have a chance listen to "Call the Police", loud, video poster lound and clear above on November 11th.

Le Haut commissaire des Nations unies pour les droits de l'homme Louise Arbour a exigé vendredi du Soudan une enquête urgente sur les attaques perpétrées dans sa province occidentale du Darfour qui ont fait, au cours des derniers jours, au moins 50 morts dont de nombreux enfants.Selon l'ONU, des milices armées ont attaqué huit zones d'habitations civiles, dont un camp accueillant 3.500 personnes déplacées.Au moins 26 enfants ont été tués, dont 21 avaient moins de dix ans, a précisé Mme Arbour dans un rapport concernant les attaques par des milices de huit villages et du camp dans le secteur de Jebel Moon. ............
Louise Arbour a estimé que la violence avait "tout au moins démontré l'échec continu du gouvernement soudanais de désarmer les milices au Darfour et, au pire, son utilisation des miliciens qui ciblent des populations civiles".................... Selon le rapport, basé sur le témoignage de témoins oculaires, 300 à 500 attaquants d'une tribu arabe locale étaient armés de Kalashnikov et de lance-roquettes RPG. Selon des témoins les miliciens portaient tous des uniformes neufs et étaient accompagnés par trois hommes avec des insignes d'officiers de l'armée soudanaise. Plusieurs témoins, cités par les Nations unies, auraient vu des meurtres d'enfants perpétrés de sang froid par les attaquants. "Quatre enfants se sont échappés d'un groupe et ont couru sous un arbre pour se protéger. Un attaquant est venu et a tiré sur eux, tuant un des enfants," se rappelle l'un des témoins.Un des attaquants a dit à un garçon qui le suppliait: "si je te laisse aller alors tu grandiras". Il a alors tué le garçon, selon le rapport. Jeudi à New York, le Secrétaire général de l'Onu Kofi Anan a condamné les attaques dans la région de Jebel Moon et demandé à Khartoum d'arrêter ces meurtres. Depuis le début du conflit entre une rébellion locale et les milices djandjawid alliées à l'armée soudanaise en février 2003, au moins 200.000 personnes ont péri des effets de la famine, des combats ou de maladie au Darfour. Pas moins de 2,4 millions ont été déplacées, d'après l'ONU......."

There wont be a full translation but this is (again) about Darfur, about the Sudanese governement organising the killing of its people, including children and about the impossibility for the international community, including the UN, to do anything about it.
One of the reason is the growing interest that China (a member of the Security Council at the UN) is having for doing business with Africa. In the case of Sudan, it's oil against weapon, certainly the same weapons that are used for what can now be called a génocide in Darfur.
This is making me sick.....
This is the most speaking example for the need of a stronger UN, a strong UN army and the obligation for the UN to stop governement who are organising mass slaughter of their population, hiding behing a right of sovereignty that should fade out in case a government let a genocide develop inside its borders.
